The Vandalism and Destruction of Rock Art
article by Ancient Man - photo by Ancient Man

Here is a photographic example of how some vandals attempted to destroy a petroglyph site.

Petroglyph - almost destroyedAs you can see some vandals were trying to chisel out this petroglyph panel from the sandstone cliff.  This kind of wanton destruction of our Native American past is uncalled for, and it brings tears to my eyes every time I look at this photograph.  Click the thumbnail for a larger view. My friends, please when you are viewing any rock art panel keep in mind that even the oils from the hands can destroy such things as being able to date the panels.  Stay at least 10 feet away from any panel when viewing them.  Please, if you see anyone attempting the destruction of rock art anywhere, report the perpetrators to the authorities.  This kind of thing must stop!

The following is from Utah Rock Art Research Association "Site Etiquette" by Clay Johnson:

"Take time to appreciate the beauty of the site surrounding the rock art. Look at the mountains and canyons, the waters, the plants, the wildlife. Listen to the native sounds. Feel the sun and wind. Sit still until the birds come out and the lizards climb your leg."

"Take time to appreciate the intricacy and detail of each rock art panel itself rather than trying to see the maximum number of panels. Don't interpret the panel, just sit quietly and watch. Give the rocks time to speak to you."
